Keep It Simple

Misery is complexity. Happiness is simplicity” – Lester Levenson

I wanted to touch on an idea that has always intrigued me and the more I open myself up to it and put it into practice in my life, the more evident it becomes in my reality. That idea is simply that as seekers of truth, the more complicated something is, the further it is away from ultimate truth. The more we can simplify things in our lives, the closer we come to what is the genuine Truth or Way.

So simplicity is key, and cutting away all the unnecessary fat so to speak, can clear our connection to the Source that is within us all. It’s a simple formula to abide by in our lives to help keep us grounded and on the right path. When we can do this more and more in our lives, we find ourselves genuinely more happy and content. This has a lot also to do with the fact that things become more and more effortless for us as well.

We can see the idea of complexity being the norm, and almost praised in our society, so in many ways people tend to resist this idea because it is so prevalent and ingrained. It’s almost as if we are taught that the more complex an idea or program(s), system, solution etc., is to get a certain desired result, the more effort has been put into it, and hence people many times feel more of a sense of accomplishment. But usually this is just the ego talking. The truth of the matter is though, is that many things can actually be really simple and easy that seemingly are not.  autumn-path

It doesn’t always have to be some ten, twenty or thirty step process that takes forever to get where you want to be. But in some cases, entire industries are based on complication, so we are brainwashed into thinking it has to be this way, when it doesn’t. There’s a lot of money to be made in keeping things complicated, so keep that in mind. It also is a good way to control people and keep them dependent upon something outside themselves or keep them submerged in an on going, sometimes unnecessary process that delays direct contact with a simple solution.

In fact, when someone does something or drops something simply, without going through all of the complicated motions so to speak, it almost seems unreal, or impossible to believe. What this really means is that one is taking things to a new, higher level is all. Simplicity is the gateway. A big part of this though, is also one’s belief or quality of consciousness that this is possible.

Since being genuinely happy is our natural state of being from following a simpler more grounded path, it is authentic.  Complexity on the other hand includes (amongst other things) over-analyzing, over-thinking, not trusting yourself or your instincts and doubting your own power.  In the end complexity is a very restricting and limiting way to live and approach things, and just obscures our direct access to happiness, because happiness is not complex.

In the light (or darkness) of what the norm in our society is and what is expected of us, we have to have a solid, unshakeable state of mind and belief in ourselves that we can do things better and differently, or in this case more simply. Give it a shot and see what happens, if worse comes to worse you can always go back to your old complicated ways.

‘Re-finding’ Your Way

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterEmail this to someone

In the twists and turns of life, sometimes we feel we either are right on course for where we think we need to be or we may feel like something is missing, or even that we have maybe lost our way. Hopefully you feel like you are ‘right where you need to be’, but if you feel otherwise, don’t despair because you are not alone and you can get back on track.

The strangest part about feeling this way is that it can be hard to pin down exactly why you do. Some people may even say they feel ‘depressed’ or just feel out of sorts. I know when I was younger, I found myself often in a state of melancholy and never really knew why. I had a loving family and people that cared about me, was healthy and athletic, played sports, had a lot of friends, I wasn’t poor, etc., and so I really had no real reason to feel this way.

I only mention this about myself because I can relate when someone tells me they feel out of sorts and they can’t explain it, I was like this for years. But I would shift, sometimes happy and filled with wonder, and sometimes the opposite. I didn’t know where I was going in life although I had a lot going for me. The smallest thing could seemingly change my mood, and ultimately my course, almost like a leaf at the mercy of the wind.

Sometimes it hits me as an adult, being much older now almost like it did way back then. But if I look at the big picture, take a deep breath and a step back, I see that I was happy coming into this world, as a child the world was full of wonder and limitless possibilities. We can recapture this in our current state, but only if we consciously choose so. It has to be a daily decision to do it. And if we do, it will be the same and at the same time not the same, (the feeling that is) because we are always changing, evolving, and growing as human beings. seasonal-duallity-tree

But the feeling is what counts. So how do we arrive back at the feeling of knowing we are on the right path or Way? Re-finding your Way is always a rediscovery of yourself and who you think you are. It’s natural to lose yourself, life can become seemingly so complicated and there are just too many variables sometimes to avoid this from happening. So recognizing this, is the first step in getting back on track.

An important thing to remember also is that you can simplify the basics that you need to and that there were things you have experienced in the past that you felt gave you purpose, that motivated you to move with energy and excitement. We can reclaim or revisit these ‘things’, whatever they may be to help us get back on course. We can try some new activities or hobbies we’ve been putting off as well to help start to shift and see things differently.

Sometimes maybe we need to just take a break. I have found that for me personally, taking a hiatus from something you are so used to doing can help tremendously and gives me fresh perspective. Remember, you are not obligated to do anything. You are only obligated to yourself, and sometimes being a little selfish is OK. I am not saying neglect those around you that need you, just that if you are not the ‘you’, you need to be, those around you will suffer as well. So take some time for yourself if need be.

Ultimately the key to re-finding your way to where you feel ok with everything, is finding balance. The only real balance we can have control over is what we do with our bodies, how we think and our reaction to things. Letting go of controlling outcomes, and other peoples opinions and actions is a must. Some other practical things we can do daily is to go inside and out.

By inside and out, I mean doing some type of daily internal practice (meditation, affirmations, personal mantra, self-hypnosis, breathing exercises/chi kung, etc.) and some type of physical activity (calisthenics, weight training, jogging/walking, hiking, yoga, martial arts, etc.). By going ‘inside’ and ‘out’ we not only rejuvenate ourselves, but help ourselves to focus our energy and be in the moment. When we can do this, the universe naturally starts putting us back on track.

You Always Have Options

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterEmail this to someone

For whatever reason it seems that most people tend to limit themselves… and in more ways than one. We tend to limit ourselves when it comes to our relationships, jobs/career, hobbies, food choices, places we go, what we wear, what we say, our belief systems etc., I could go on and on. This topic came to me because I realized that I am at fault of doing this just as much as the next guy and I see it happen all the time amongst people I talk to that I know as well as people I just met.

This is the recipe for a comfortable, but rather boring life. Keeping ourselves limited that is. But we humans tend to err on the side of comfort rather than taking a risk. It’s just seemingly easier that way, although as the old saying goes, ‘no risk, no reward’. It’s true, you will rarely be rewarded handsomely for doing the same routine stuff over and over or repeating the same old pattern(s) in life. And that’s pretty much what this boils down to, we get used to repeating the same patterns in our lives. It’s easy to get used to doing the same things over and over.

The same route to work, the same meals cycled through over and over every week or two, the same clothes we wore just last week, the same word patterns that come out of our mouths on auto-pilot, the same thought patterns that we engage ourselves in. If you have ever heard of Pareto’s Principle or better known as the 80/20 rule, this explains this concept rather well.

It basically states that 80 percent of the output of a given situation is determined by 20 percent of the input. This is a rough estimate, and in reality sometimes it can be more extreme like 85/15 or even 90/10. For example, you could say that some (if not many) people will wear a small portion (20 percent) of their wardrobe 80 percent of the time. Didn’t I just wear this shirt last week? yin-yang-tip

So I’d like to take this time out to remind you (and myself) that you always have options. You don’t have to stay in that mediocre relationship just because you are comfortable and used to that person. You don’t have to stay in that same boring job you hate (or semi-hate), you don’t have to have the same routine everyday even if you think it is a healthy one! Ah, there are a lot of you don’t have to’s in life, are there not?

We talk a lot about changing the way we think about things on this blog, especially our beliefs about things or changing our core belief system to help us evolve. This is a big one that many will stick to tooth and nail just because it was what they were taught to believe ever since they were children. We don’t want to rock the boat or move that cornerstone that all of our beliefs are based upon out of comfort and fear of what it would mean.

Plus, a lot of those around us and those people we always looked up to either taught us these things or approved of them. The societal matrix we live in depends on us keeping with the status quo and not questioning the mainstream consensus. This is another biggie when it comes to limiting ourselves and our options in life.

A good way of looking at other options or making some changes for ourselves is to see things as an adventure or better yet an experiment. This way there isn’t too much heavy emotional investment and it’s easier to take some risks mentally. We could always go back to our old ways if we choose.

Try This Experiment in Manifestation

Here’s something you can try, just as a fun experiment:

  • Start telling yourself and visualizing something that you would like to see ultimately manifest in your life, whether that be a certain experience or situation you would like to be part of. Manifesting a concrete object you can also do, but I find can be more difficult in the beginning, so start with the latter which is easier at first.
  • Choose an experience that really intrigues and entertains you (hopefully positive). Something simple that would be fun and easy to visualize, imagine or daydream about if you want to look at it that way.  It could be as simple as getting a certain reaction from a particular person (or a stranger even), running into someone (friend or acquaintance) somewhere in particular (or a random place even) or having someone say something to you out of the blue. Eventually you can build on this and create more complex situations.
  • Of course, the more time and energy you put into it on a daily basis the better, but you should do it daily, twice a day for best results. Let yourself relax and use your imagination.  In the end, your mind does not know the difference between something real or imagined that you tell it as long as you put strong emotion and visualization behind it and so it goes to work creating it. Give it a shot and see what happens. Be patient, it may take a while so at least give it 30 days.

I’ve actually manifested some interesting things/experiences in my life doing this. The strangest part about this process is that if and when it does happen, it will when you least expect it and secondly, it’s rarely exactly as you thought it would be. There are usually at least some small, if not sometimes large differences/details from what you visualized although the general idea, experience or concept that you chose to create happens.

The more you do it, the better you get at it because your confidence builds and so does your belief in your ability to do it. The more you master this process the more accurate your experience will be compared to your created visualization/story. Have fun with it and don’t take yourself too seriously.  It’s good to exercise our options more often than not. Experimenting with our creative self is one way to do this and explore reality on a deeper level.

It’s too easy to do the same thing over and over and build repetitious patterns in our lives as I mentioned before. Patterns can be a good thing in some cases but they can also become a trap, and a limiting one at that. Remember, we are also creative (human) beings, so we have free will and free choice to break our self-imposed, limiting molds and models and give ourselves endless options.

The Power of Nothingness

After all, true patience is the Master’s final lesson”  – Kung Fu, The Legend Continues

Sometimes it seems like nothing is happening in our life. By nothing, I mean the things we’d like to see happen in our life whether that be goals we’ve set for ourselves or just things we want to have. What we usually do when this happens, is start to get restless and impatient. When we get this way, we start to do things that go against our personal values and principles.

What’s funny about this, (if you could call it that) is that when this usually happens, you were in many cases so close to having what you thought you wanted and you didn’t even know it. Go figure. A lot of times the universe tests us. You could even say the universe is always testing us. Are we ready for the next step in our personal evolution? Are we really ready for the next level in life we often dream about, whatever that may be for each of us?

This ironically, is the time when we need to stick to our guns the most. A good analogy that comes to mind is when you are working out, and you have that one extra rep, or few seconds left to hold in a particular pose or stance that will take you further than you ever pushed yourself before. At that moment you have a choice to make… you can either quit and say you’ll get it next time or you can stick it out.

This is when the most progress is made, in that moment when you either compromise and give in or make that choice that is the right one, albeit the seemingly more difficult one at the time. It’s like we have to keep having to remind ourselves that we are on the right path because it’s so easy to take that same old road back that always gets us nowhere. ying yang moon

‘Evidence’ is one thing that can really help to propel us forward toward seeing our desires come to fruition. Unfortunately though, when we don’t see it we fall back into old bad habits and negative patterns. Know and understand this, you are always creating in the moment you either think about something, write about it or take action on it. We are creative beings and we are always creating our reality.

So as long as we can recognize and accept this fact, we can feel confident that we are moving forward in a positive way, although we may not see the evidence or concrete reality formed of what we would like to see right in front of us yet. Looking at things this way, we know we are not just fooling ourselves.

Back to nothing happening. Nothing can be a great thing actually, and only in the space of nothing can something be created. Nothing is neither positive or negative, but the primordial space where everything springs from. Like the Chinese philosophical concept of Wuji, from which the universe and the positive/negative duality or Taiji ( Supreme Ultimate ) sprang, Wuji  literally means: limitless; infinite; nothingness.

If we can be patient and embrace nothing, and by patient I mean total acceptance of nothing happening with no expectations beyond it. Total acceptance of it to the point where we can truly let go of wanting ‘that thing’ and really be okay with having nothing happen for the forseeable future.

When we can enter this space in our minds and embrace it, endless possibilities open up. In this space we can relax and let go; in this space creative potential starts to flow. In this space of nothingness the universe starts handing us limitless options and opportunities. Ironically, we end up getting much more than we originally wanted and it happens effortlessly.

Listen to Your Body

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterEmail this to someone

Something I’ve noticed about myself over time has been that my body knows what’s best for me, even better than my mind does. Our mind can be something that can be quite hard, if not impossible to pin down, but our body is always right there telling us things about ourselves and the world around us. Yet for some reason most of us tend to ignore what it tells us.

In many cases what it tells us is so concrete, ranging from a gut feeling to a twitching sensation, from a nervous reaction to a fluttering in our chests. A lot of times, our body can tell us things before we know it mentally. Sometimes we even get sick, and believe it or not it may even be for good reason. Maybe we just need to slow things down in life, and yet we don’t… but our body just shuts down sometimes and gives us no choice but to slow down and rest.

Another way our body tells us what’s best is when we get hurt. Recently, I’ve been recovering from a severely strained ligament in my right hip/leg. Being that I am so active, it’s been really difficult for me not to engage in some type of exercise or physical activity. I really haven’t had much choice but to limit myself though, because the pain has been so constant and rather intense. As I slowly recover, I can feel my mobility coming back but really it’s up to my body to tell me when I can resume the type of dynamic movements I am accustomed to doing. Again, my body knows best!

Smarter Training

If we listen to our bodies as well when we train, we can also prevent injuries from occuring, or lessen their body outlineimpact. This seems obvious, but as many athletes will tell you, they always seem to push themselves harder than they should. Our bodies will cramp up telling us we need more fluid intake for example, or the pain is not the good pain from a muscle ripping workout, but something deep in the tendons or connective tissues that tells us to let off and go easier.

I’ve ignored my body many times in the past and to my peril. From overstretching certain joints thinking I needed to push, push, push to ‘get there’ and thus causing damage… to pushing myself too hard, too fast in a run without going gradual first to allow my body to adjust and adapt because I haven’t done that particular type of run in a long time. We can be our own worst enemies, although our intentions are usually good.

Sometimes we get so used to certain workout routines that we do daily and we will do them no matter what! I’ve noticed that sometimes when I take a break for a few days (longer than I’d really like to, I admit) I come back stronger and faster than ever it seems. It’s like the break in between is what our body needs and craves for us to take things to the next level.

Greater Awareness & Safety

Our body will tell us things that can often save our life as well. From the odd feeling deep down that someone is watching us, yet we don’t see anyone (usually someone is watching us in most cases) to the gut wrenching sensation that something bad is going to happen and then it does! This is usually the case because we went on doing what we were doing without pausing and reflecting in that moment to make the necessary changes.  We usually don’t notice that we had that feeling until after the fact.

I remember, I had this really weird feeling about this party many of my friends were going to when I was much younger, it kept nagging me. I was actually on my way to the party after I got out of work late when I turned my car around and went home instead. I couldn’t explain it at the time, I just chalked it up to me being ‘not in the mood’ to really go. Turns out, a huge fight broke out and some people got really badly hurt. This has happened to me more than once, where I just felt strangely uncomfortable in a place and decided to leave instead of forcing myself to stay and turns out something bad happened later I found out.

There is a reason why they call it a gut feeling, (some will call it intuition) but it comes from your gut and your body is telling you something! So do yourself a favor and get more in tune with your body and to listening to it, you’ll thank it later.

Everything Can Be an Opportunity

“When one door is closed, don’t you know, another is open” – Bob Marley

I thought I would touch upon an idea that I feel has helped me evolve and grow more than anything else lately. This is the idea or concept that anything can be an opportunity. An opportunity for what you may ask? Simple, an opportunity to grow as a person faster than you could otherwise. Life is constantly throwing us into different situations and ‘curve balls’ at us so to speak whether they be positive or negative or nuetral. It’s how we react in the moment that matters most which will determine what we make of it.

We’ve talked a lot on this blog about how important it is to be in the moment, and for good reason! It sometimes sounds cliche even, but being present is really a huge key to recognizing things for what they really are when they are happening. Many times things don’t always go as planned and we find ourselves wishing we were elsewhere but where we are for example.  It can be really hard to not just react on auto-pilot, especially in a negative situation.

I find that re-framing what you would normally call a ‘problem’ or ‘challenge’ instead of as an opportunity can help you really take in the reigns of a particular situation you find yourself in and control your emotional state. Controlling your emotions can be easier said than done but is truly the holy grail when it comes to being able to stay calm in the eye of the storm. Allow emotions to wash through you, but don’t get caught up in any one in particular. Seeing the opportunity can help us do just that. open door light

But it’s not just about flipping negative situations and scenarios on their head into opportunities to grow and learn from. Everything can be an opportunity for growth. Sometimes we are just used to acting a certain way all the time out of habit or not taking action at all when we can. Sometimes opportunity can be staring us right in the face and we don’t even notice it or we do but don’t do anything out of fear. If looked at simply as an opportunity to grow and not as something to necessarily get or gain we just might go for it. In this way, failure or rejection don’t hold the meaning they normally do and are no longer relevant.

You end up doing things and acting for the sake of pure experience. There is nothing to get, nothing to gain but you always grow.  Also if you are acting with the intention to give instead, you can take this idea to the next level and you can’t go wrong because you are helping people for the sake of helping people. Truly a win win as they say.

Sometimes we tend to dwell on the past and over-analyze things, situations, relationships etc. I know I have a tendency to do this more often than I’d like to admit. Taken as an opportunity to grow and learn from, it’s never time wasted as some people are led to believe. I can see why the universe put me in that place, scenario or why I met someone for example.

As the Dalai Lama has said, ‘remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.’  Not everything is what it always seems, and in this case we have the power to change any situation we find ourselves in to be one of self-empowerment and growth. It’s just boils down to our perception of it.

It’s Never Too Late

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterEmail this to someone

Sometimes in life we feel like we missed the boat on something, and that could be anything from starting a new hobby, a new art, going somewhere you always wanted to go, giving it a go in a different career or starting a business you always wanted to, to doing something outrageous like jumping out of plane. But why do we sometimes feel this way? Who says it’s too late to do something that you’ve been putting off that seems like forever?

I don’t think that it’s truly you that feels this way… or maybe it is. Maybe society, and your friends and family would frown upon you doing that ‘thing’. Maybe you do feel too old to do it or that too much time has passed you by. Maybe you’re just used to things being the way they are… or maybe it’s a combination of things. I guess I am writing this to say that if you are still alive and can move on your own volition than you can do whatever you want, when you want.

Maybe what you think you really want to do is impossible. I’m here to also tell you that sometimes what most people think is impossible or the hardest thing to do or have can actually sometimes be the easiest. I heard someone once say, and it has stuck with me ever since that ‘a miracle is the easiest thing to do’. Do you think a miracle, which by some definition is something that is not even possible really takes effort? If a miracle is not supposed to be possible in the first place, then how is it that it somehow still happens?  canyons other world

I’d like to challenge your thinking, so you can challenge yourself in a way that can make your life more exciting. So that maybe one day you can look back and say I did it my way. And you can feel more content. And who knows maybe you’ll fail at whatever this ‘thing’ may be. Maybe it won’t live up to the expectation you thought it would. But hey at least you can rest easy knowing you gave it a go.

I think most of us have some things we still want to do, see, feel, and experience in this life that we have not yet.  I think that doing those things that resonate with us the most is really the key to happiness and contentment. Sometimes doing something the opposite way which you normally would is a good way to ignite some passion in yourself I have found, which may inspire you to take action finally.

Also I have found that you are never really fully ‘ready’ or the timing will never really be ‘perfect’ for you to do whatever you have been putting off.  So who knows give it a go, maybe you’ll surprise yourself!

Expanding Your Awareness

The Mind Should Be Nowhere in Particular – Takuan

We basically have two forms of exercise, mental and physical. In my opinion they go hand and hand and as evolving human beings we should strive to find balance between the two. Unfortunately, most people only focus on exercising the physical side, whether that be going to the gym, playing sports etc. There is of course mental components to all physical exercise, and how much we choose to engage the mind is really up to the individual. There are forms of exercise which begin to merge the two – mind and body. Yoga and martial arts come to mind.

But as a Buddhist monk once told me, most people are keen on keeping their body’s clean, showering daily, brushing their teeth etc., but yet they neglect scrubbing their minds, like much needed mental floss. Exercising your mental side, or your mind naturally does a few things. For one, it enhances your awareness. This includes, your awareness of yourself and the world around you. Another natural by-product is a reduction in stress, which plays a big role in much of the modern illnesses that befall humanity.

Venturing deeper into the expansion of awareness aspect of mental exercise, comes an almost never ending adventure. Awareness is such a deep topic that I can only really touch upon on it here in this blog post. By expanding your awareness, the world becomes more alive and interesting and so do you.

Slowing Things Down

One great way to start becoming more aware and getting yourself off of auto-pilot is by slowing things down. By slowing down your physical movements, this begins to slow down your mind. The only way this works though is if you are present in your movements and not letting your mind wander. Like Tai Chi, by slowing your movements down and being in ‘your body’, your mind becomes more integrated and aware of your body at a deeper, cellular level.

My old XingYi and Tai Chi teacher once told me something that has stuck with me ever since, ‘the slower you go the faster you’ll be’. This I found applies to how our mind can function at a higher level, and can be applied beyond martial arts. If you slow down your movements, and thus your mental activity, you become more aware of the subtleties of your surroundings and your mind actually becomes sharper, more concentrated and acute. By slowing things down and taking our time, we can approach doing the mundane tasks of everyday life as if they are a moving meditation.  galaxy eyes

Now, you could say this is hard to do in this fast paced society where I hear so many people saying (including myself), ‘there is not enough time in the day!’ and rushing through life seems to be the norm. But in my opinion, this is exactly why it can have such a powerful effect and is needed now more than ever. Also, I am not saying to do this all the time, but as an exercise when time permits. Eventually though, you will find yourself being more in tune and slowing down your movements throughout the day. A more methodical experience in your movements will begin to appear if you take this on.

Sleep Can Become an Adventure

I think it goes without saying, but sitting meditation is a great tool to help expand your awareness and if you have not added some form of daily, sitting meditation into your life, I highly recommend you do. This can also effect the quality and awareness of your sleep, especially doing so right before bed. I have had experiences where I am actually aware of myself falling asleep. In these interim states of awareness, you can do things such as astral projection and have out of body experiences. Even sleep can become much more exciting! There are more detailed exercises you can engage in to facilitate this type of awareness when falling asleep which I may touch upon in more detail in future posts.

A wilderness survival teacher I had once told me, ‘most people are so unaware that they don’t even notice which way the wind blows when they step outside’. The benefits of increasing your awareness become more apparent, for instance being more aware of your surroundings and thus the people in it. You begin noticing things you and most people normally would not otherwise, including people coming into your sphere and even picking up on their intent.

The impact this can have on your safety is obvious. Another benefit is you naturally become less reactive as you are in more of a state of flow when you are more present, aware and relaxed. Ultimately, this is a state of mind to strive for and I feel is one where I like to be as much as possible.

Taking Responsibility For Your Health

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterEmail this to someone

When I speak with people on the topic of health the subject of ‘responsibility’ inevitably comes up. So I put some thought into why this might be, and a key point kept coming to mind. First, I noticed that most people that do not accept responsibility for their own health usually, and if this is the case are always blaming others and things outside of themselves for their ill bodily conditions.

Saying something like – ‘oh I always get sick this time of year, or that person made me sick’ is a perfect example of something I hear quite often. I believe that if you can change your lifestyle gradually to a healthier one, which includes having a healthier mindset, you don’t have to get sick every year if you really do not want to. Most of us mentally program ourselves to get sick and we don’t even realize we are doing it.

Another example is when we see a person sneezing and coughing, and our first thought is ‘uh oh, I hope I don’t catch what he has’, or we see ads on television that the so called ‘flu season’ is upon us and we think, ‘well I’ll probably catch the flu this year sooner or later’. Thinking in this way, like so many people do is disempowering to say the least. So in addition to acting healthier – exercising, eating healthier – eliminating junk food and fast food, we can be thinking healthier as well.  A good place to start is by taking responsibility for our health, whether we are sick or feeling great.

When was the last time you felt great and you said to yourself something along the lines of ‘gee I feel so good because of me, because of who I am and what I do.’ Well if you do say things like this to yourself then congratulations because most people do not give themselves enough credit for feeling good and doing their best to lead a healthier lifestyle. So what I am saying in effect is that it works both ways, you can create your own health circumstances in life or you can act as a victim and be a slave to them. shunan-bamboo-forest-02

Once we begin to actively and consciously take credit for the good, as well as the bad health circumstances we encounter in our lives, we will begin to notice that it’s up to us to how well we would like to feel and not so much on the outside world we once thought controls us. A great question to ask yourself everyday is: how did I bring this into my life? You examine your thought processes, correct your thinking and move on.

This is much more powerful than you may think, but of course prove it to yourself.

We can consciously choose to enhance our well-being and health through adding a healthy exercise regimen to our daily routine for example. This will give both your body and mind a boost and you can easily thank yourself and praise yourself for the high, glowing feeling you get after a great workout, whether it be with weights, calisthenics, yoga, pilates, martial arts, etc., you get my point.

Doing healthier activities compound over time and become cumulative. In the case that you do get sick even though you are taking supplements to enhance your immune system, exercising regularly and eating healthy… don’t beat yourself up. Accept that you allowed yourself to be sick and nothing else. Then make up your mind to get healthier and become better, faster than ever before. Don’t get negative, and you will see that over time you will stay healthier for longer and longer periods until you do not get sick anymore.

Yes it is possible to be healthy all year around, you just need to accept that it is possible.

I personally rarely, if ever get sick and I don’t remember the last time I went to see a doctor for that matter (besides my sports related injuries!). By accepting responsibility for my health and everything that happens to me in my life, I am able to stay healthy and feel great. Of course my daily activities, internal exercises, food and vitamin/supplement intake and mindset have everything to do with this.

The Key to Staying Positive

There is a lot of talk of ‘being positive’ and ‘thinking positive’ when it comes to self-development and taking better control of your life, and really for good reason. Ultimately, if you subscribe to the mindset that you create your reality as I do, then being a positive person and thinking positively is the way to go if you are choosing to live a more happy and evolved life. Now this does not mean that if you are always positive, negative things will not happen to you… I mean this is life! But, the key to being a truly positive person is that when negative situations do arise, it’s how you handle yourself and your reaction to the situation that matters most.

So staying positive is a choice, a decision, just like anything else in life. Your emotions are just trained responses that you have gotten used to over the course of your life. Contrary to popular belief, you do have control over your emotions and thoughts if you choose. Really though, the trickiest part to having an optimistic and positive mindset is in the beginning, when you are just starting to walk this higher level path, when you are just starting to grasp how and if this is really possible. When you find yourself mostly negative and angry more often than you would like to be and when things seem to be going wrong in your life how can you possibly be positive? Do you have to fool yourself?… fake it till you make it as they say?

Not really, it mostly comes down to your perspective… and having proper perspective is gained through awareness and detachment. Here is what I mean, look at the big picture when you find yourself in a bad situation, it’s usually not as bad as you make it out to be and not the end of the world. In most instances, we are on auto-pilot and have been taught to react negatively because really, it’s what most other people do and that is what we have mostly seen our entire lives. Our society and culture is more negative and fear-based than positive and this is reflected on tv, in the news, media, staged world events etc.  Why this is the case is another matter that I won’t get into here, but this has all influenced and programmed us over time. sun glow

But again, awareness is key. Take a step back, take a deep breath, don’t just react. Make your reaction a conscious decision, take yourself off auto-pilot. Detach yourself from what everyone else is doing and how they react. Watch your thoughts closely but don’t identify with them. Most people are controlled by their emotions and thoughts and are not in control of them. So it’s natural to see how our society thinks it is normal to react negatively to negative situations and people… garbage in and garbage out. But if you want to live a more positive existence you have to think and act differently than most people do. You have to take a different path, a higher path.

Also, if you are into doing positive affirmations, mantras, etc. or consciously taking time out throughout your day to focus on and tell yourself the positive thoughts and events you would like to see and create in your life, but you are still not seeing your mindset and life change for the positive, then it’s the time in-between that you are not being aware of.

What is the time in-between? The in-between is when you are going about your day doing tasks, chores, work etc., beyond your conscious effort to think positively and thoughts just come and go automatically which you are not really aware of. In most cases, although you think you are a positive person and are making a conscious effort to be so, you are still not aware of how unconsciously negative you really are.

It is important to know that this process is natural, so that you become even more aware of your every unconsious thought that comes in throughout the day. When you notice the thoughts that are negative, the next step is to be detached from them and don’t beat yourself up about it. Understand that this is just your mind on auto-pilot. It will take some time to retrain and reprogram your mind (I highly recommend doing some form of meditation daily to help increase your awareness and speed up this process).

Finally, turn the thought(s) around and re-frame it into its positive opposite that you would like to see and repeat it in that way at least three times. Eventually over time, this process will become a habit and you will find yourself in a more positive state of mind reaping more positive results. So in a nutshell, the key to staying positive is a simple three step process: awareness—>detachment—>reframe thoughts to positive.

When negative thoughts and situations come into your life, it’s the perfect opportunity for you to take the high road and evolve even faster as a better more positive person. Again, it’s how you perceive things that makes all the difference and what you make of it. Keep in mind also that this is a journey so again, don’t be too hard on yourself, enjoy the ride and the progress you make.
